We’ve all seen the images of the dustbowl, that drying, dissected expanse of heartland that broke so many farmers in the first half of the 20th century. The rains didn’t come, inadequate farming techniques denuded the lands, and winds peeled the earth away, filling people’s homes and lungs with the choking residue of a prosperous nation.
It was the beginning of the end for much of the farming community in the United States. It was heartbreaking.
We want the dust gone, even though without the dust we would not be here.
Yes, dust is not all bad, even if we do constantly use our Swiffer and dust mop, and our supply of Endust frequently needs replenished.
Genesis 2:7 tells of the beginnings of mankind upon the face of the earth. In this verse, God forms man from the dust of the ground, and he breathes life into his nostrils.
Dust. From dust we come, and to dust we will return. It’s what we’re made of.
Here’s the downside. Because we are made of dust, we tend to do things that are infused with dusty traits. If we don’t think so, all we have to do is turn to Galatians 5:19-20. This passage lists the whole gamut of dusty deeds that man is prone to.
“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Read that last part again. Those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Our dusty beginnings. Where is our Endust? Where is our Swiffer? The Word tells us the dust must be gone.
Wait! We have a solution to the dusty mess that is mankind. It’s right there in Romans 8:1.
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
God has provided microfiltration in the person of his Son. When we are with Jesus, the dust can’t get to us. We are scrubbed clean, and we don’t need the Endust. We can toss the Swiffer. That dust mop? It’s already on the way out the door.
All we need is Jesus.
All who come to Jesus are new in him, and the detritus of our past is washed away. It doesn’t even leave any traces of dust in the corners.
