The 91st Psalm

English Audio Version

Some passages in the Bible are iconic. Even for the nonbeliever, they resonate and uplift the spirit. Let’s pull from the 91st Psalm to find strength in our Christian walk.

[I] shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Life’s problems aren’t the core of who we are. They happen to us, but they aren’t us. We can pass through them undefiled, unhurt, all the while trusting and loving our mighty God.

He is my refuge and my fortress.

Christ becomes our safe redoubt from the attacks of the evil one. The devil can come against us, but he cannot defeat us when we abide in Jesus.

He shall deliver you from the snare.

In Christ’s darkest hour, he was assured of the promise of the Holy Spirit to deliver him, and that same promise is ours today.

His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

Jesus paid the price for our redemption, and we are invited to dwell with him between the cherubim and the mercy seat.

You shall not be afraid.

Neither spiritual darkness, deliberate attacks by the devil, nor the temptations of this life can penetrate the protection of our Lord.

A thousand shall fall… but it shall not come near you.

Untold millions may be blinded by this world, but we are assured we are shielded by our trust in God.

There shall no evil befall you.

We dwell in the secret place of the most high, and it is impossible for evil to find us there.

He shall give his angels charge over you.

Our Messiah traversed the wilderness in total dependence on God. We can find the same assurance in our walk with him.

You shall tread upon the lion and adder.

The evil one and his minions are already underneath our heel. From there, they cannot rise against us.

I will deliver him and honor him… and show him my salvation.

Not only do we see the resurrection of Christ in this verse, but also we find the salvation of those who trust in Christ and reap the joys of his sacrifice at Calvary.

God is our refuge and our fortress, and only in him do we find our place of spiritual protection and eternal salvation.
