At the start of the new year, we want to grasp the chance for a new start. It’s all around us, and we don’t want to miss out.
The old year out and the new year in. We vow this one will be different.
We can see the end of winter, and we look forward to spring. It’s our promise of new life.
We even experience this fresh start in our finances. Many businesses (and Uncle Sam!) conclude the fiscal year at the end of December. January is our opportunity to strike out in a newly responsible direction.
Here’s what God’s Word says about tossing out your old life when you come to Christ.
Isaiah 43:18-19 says we no longer must worry about our past.
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
Lamentations 3:22-23 assures us we will be continually refreshed in Jesus.
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Ezekiel 11:18-19 is our promise we will become kinder, warmer people.
“And when they come there, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations. And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh.”
Romans 6:3-4 tells us we are following in the footsteps of Jesus.
“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 says we are made brand new through our salvation.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
Philippians 3:13-14 points to our goal, which is Christ and our heavenly reward.
“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Our old life out and our new one in. We are different than before. We can see the end of the disaster we were, and we look forward to the promise of new life.
From our family and friends to our finances, there’s no reason to keep what we were when we can become what Jesus wants us to be.
There’s no excuse. It’s time to connect with Jesus today.
