When we first leave our parents’ home, we see life as a string of possibilities. We will get married, receive a promotion at work, even have wonderful children who will be academic and sports stars.
Everything will be perfect. Tomorrow is a glittering jewel of opportunities, and any one of them is ours for the taking.
Then, real life happens to us. It socks us in the face, and we have to reevaluate everything we know.
Proverbs 29:24 warns us not to stumble into sin. It brings us self-hatred.
“The partner of a thief hates his own life; he hears the curse, but discloses nothing.”
Proverbs 19:13 is the dark side of a poor familial relationship. When love fades, so does the joy in our union.
“A foolish son is ruin to his father, and a wife's quarreling is a continual dripping of rain.”
Psalm 50:18 begs us to be careful who we choose for our friends. We become like the people we spend the most time with.
“If you see a thief, you are pleased with him, and you keep company with adulterers.”
2 John 1:10-11 tells us that to welcome false teachers is to become a part of the false teaching.
“If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.”
Proverbs 27:1 cautions us against over-confidence, for it makes the steps we take very slippery, indeed.
“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”
Ephesians 4:28 tells us how we can once again find the glittering jewel of God’s promise of a better tomorrow.
“Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.”
Stumbling in our walk with Christ doesn’t mean we lose his favor. Rather, he desires us to cast aside that which hinders us, and find our strength in him. His tomorrows are out there waiting. All we have to do is reach out once more and grab hold of the cross.
We’re out of opportunities when we’re out of life. As long as we live and breathe, the Father has a work for us to do.
