God’s Stomach Ache

Visit the local pharmacy one afternoon, and look for a purple box. Turn on a computer and search for “the purple pill.” Watch television and scour the commercials for a purple motorhome. All of these tell the same story.

What we consume upsets our stomachs, and we need relief.

At one time we would have spelled out R-O-L-A-I-D-S. Now, we have stronger medications at our beck and call. To believe the ads, we never have to worry about what we eat ever again. Pizza! Sausages! All the fried food we want! Let’s stoke up!

What gives God a stomach ache? The Bible gives us an exhaustive list of what disagrees with God.

False Prophets:

Acts 13:6, 9-10 reveals they do not go down well:

“They came upon a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. …Paul…looked intently at him and said, You son of the devil…”

The Cowardly:

Revelation 21:8 groups them with other indigestible bits:

“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Idolatrous Practices:

Leviticus 19:26 is about the Zabians who partook of blood as the food of devils:

“You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes.”

Sorcery:

Exodus 22:18 references using things other than God for producing mystical effects:

“You shall not permit a sorceress to live.”

Falsehood:

Revelation 22:15 groups these people with the dogs:

“Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.”

Fraternizing with the World:

2 Kings 9:22 wants us to be separate for Christ:

“And when Joram saw Jehu, he said, ‘Is it peace, Jehu?’ He answered, ‘What peace can there be, so long as the whorings and the sorceries of your mother Jezebel are so many?’ ”

Mimicking Evil Practices:

Deuteronomy 18:9 states God’s position:

“When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations.”

Contacting the Dead:

Leviticus 19:31 names this practice:

“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.”

Leading the Faithful Astray:

Matthew 24:24 names those who pretend to be the Christ:

“For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.”

What is God’s purple pill? That answer comes in Revelation 22:14:

“Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.”

When we clean up our lives, then God can dine on us, and he will enjoy his meal every time.

Let’s chuck the grease of sin; then God will appreciate having us around.
