God’s Stepping Stones of Light

Nighttime is generally considered a time of sleep. If we work nights, and we must sleep during the day, we hang blackout curtains on our windows.

We want the darkness, and for good reason. Night is when the world slips away, and we can drift into our dreams of forgetfulness and imagination, dreaming things as we want them to be rather than things as they are.

Yet, the sun rises in the morning, and for most of us, stepping into the sunlight brings us awake once more. We push our dreams aside, and we step out into the real world. We live what’s true, not the world of our dreams.

Spiritually we have to cross over similar stepping stones of light to come to the knowledge of the Lord. Our humanity is a darkened world of forgetfulness and imagination, where we dream things as we want them to be rather than things as they are.

Hosea 2:16-17 tells us of the Baals of the ancient Hebrew world. This passage says:

“And in that day, declares the Lord, …no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ ”

Our modern day concept of Baal is the evil that the Hebrews worshipped in the high places and in the groves. However, the term means nothing more than Lord, and in the beginning, the Hebrews referred to Jehovah as Baal.

The Hebrews were still spiritually asleep. They were dreaming of things as they wanted them to be, and they needed to awake. They needed to walk across the stepping stones of light, to have their eyes opened to the spiritual truth of the One and Only God.

You see, the Hebrews called all gods Baal, and Jehovah was only one of the many.

Jeremiah 7:9 says:

“Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known?”

We need to turn those words to ourselves. Are we still living in spiritual darkness? Are we still waiting for the rising sun? Do we love dreaming so much that we hang blackout curtains on our souls?

The real question is this: What gods other than Jehovah have we pursued? What things have we allowed to become the Baals in our lives? These things are no more than a dream of the world as we want it to be. Only stepping into the light of Jehovah shows us the truth of things as they are.

How do we cross the stepping stones of light and find the truth of Jehovah God?

1 Samuel 7:4 tells us Israel’s solution:

“So the people of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and they served the Lord only.”

When we put our Baals aside, we can step into the light of God’s truth, for he is to be found across the stepping stones of light, where the brilliance of his presence shines forever and ever.

God is light, and stepping into him awakens us to the spiritual truth of his eternal love.
