When someone is “above the law,” the rules and regulations no longer apply to him. If he breaks a law, he can’t be prosecuted for it.
Is anyone really above the law?
Yes, actually. Take diplomatic immunity as an example. Whether we agree or disagree, the Vienna Conventions give diplomats immunity from the laws laid out by the countries of this world.
What about the Law given to us in the Bible? We are Christ’s hands on this earth. That makes us diplomats. Do Christians ever get diplomatic immunity?
Read the apostle’s words in John 1:17:
“For the Law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
The Law was all about the wickedness of man. It was given to the people of Israel, who had just come from 400 years of life under the pagan practices of Egypt. They needed a yardstick to measure themselves against, a standard to aim for.
Jesus was all about the goodness of God, his mercy and loving kindness. He came with a new yardstick, one that was higher than the Law.
What was Jesus’ standard? We are to love one another. If we can do that, we have fulfilled the Law, and we no longer need the old yardstick given to the Jews by Moses.
When we become Jesus’ diplomats, we move into a new realm, one filled with his grace and truth, and he sends us into the world to draw others unto him.
When Jesus came to earth, he superseded everything that had come before him. When we become like him, he lifts us to stand at his side.
