Christmas Is Over. Now What?

The build-up to Christmas is a phenomenal powerhouse.

Shopping starts the day after Halloween. Thanksgiving? What’s that? No one spends money on Thanksgiving (and it disappears without a whimper in the holiday rush …).

We decorate our lawns, peruse holiday catalogues, whisper our choice of gifts, and decide who’s attending the Christmas party this year.

Then it’s time to take it all down, and with the tree and the trimmings, we tend to pack away our holiday cheer at the same time.

Luke 2:20 gives a different take on our after-Christmas nod:

“The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”

What does this look like in modern times?

“Christmas is over, I know, but I found this and want you to have it.”

“I want to wish you the best January in the Lord you’ve ever had.”

“Come to church with me on Sunday. I’d like to treat you to lunch afterwards.”

There are many more ways, but these will get you started. The point is to keep our relational connections, to offer the salvation of Christ, to remind others that the goodness of God doesn’t grind to a halt with the arrival of the new year.

Christmas is meant to be observed all year. Maybe not the decorations and parties, but the love that we show to others? We should never box that up and store it on a shelf.

Let’s glorify and praise God all year long, and in doing so, share the truth of Jesus to everyone we know.

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
