Finding Kindness

We are told to be bold in Christ.

Take on the full armor of God and bash in the devils’ strongholds.

Stand on the head of the viper and never give in, never surrender.

All that’s true and good, the way we should live, but not every day and every moment. Bashing the sinner on the head isn’t always the best way forward. Showing boldness in the face of sin is a part of our Christian walk, but there are times for another side of us.

After all, even Jesus used meekness to command his situation when it furthered his ministry.

Here’s how the meek side of us should play itself out, as seen in 1 Corinthians 13:4:

“Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up.”

For our modern world, we need to understand what charity means in this verse. Let’s read it like this:

“Love suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up.”

Here are five ways we can tell we’re showing Christian love:

Way No. 1: We put up with other people’s nonsense. Yes, the loud-mouthed, arrogant, insensitive nonsense that ordinary people spout from their mouths.

Way No. 2: We are kind in return. We speak softly, remind them of God’s Word, and we do it over and over.

Way No. 3: We let others achieve success without punishing them for it emotionally or socially. We attend the opening of their new home, admire their new car, even enjoy them singing a solo on Sunday morning, all without trying to take that from them with criticism or gossip.

Way No. 4: We willingly take second place if that’s the best fit for us. No matter our education, our society background, or our financial success, we want what’s best for others and the church.

Way No. 5: We see others as equal in God’s sight. Our nose is the same height as theirs, and we never look down at anyone. A person’s finances or social position does not affect their worth in God’s eyes, and it can’t be allowed to do so in ours.

Much of love is simply being kind. Offering a hand, writing a check, saying please and thank you no matter with whom we’re dealing.

Let’s find a reason to show kindness today.
