Forgiving God

Betrayal is the slice of a hot razor blade thrust into our soul. It cuts so deeply that even when we think it is healed, the smallest reminder can make it bleed once again.

It may be a friend that shared a deep secret, and then it was out for the world to see. Our spouse, not faithful. Children, gone amidst harsh words. Promises made, then carelessly tossed aside.

How can we forgive betrayal?

God’s Word says:

A liar will not go unpunished. Proverbs 19:5.

He will curse those who dishonor us. Genesis 12:3.

The wicked will have no defense in the judgment. Psalm 1:5.

How can we forgive betrayal? We can hand it to God, and let him stand true to his Word.

However, what about when the betrayal cuts deeper? We stand on Isaiah 53:5, and the cancer returns, eating away at us inside. Our daughter trains for the mission field, and she is killed in a freak accident. Our tithes are paid faithfully, and our finances crumble around us.

How can we forgive betrayal?

Death is the ultimate healing, we are told, for we will stand at the right hand of God. Our daughter’s demise will lead others to Christ. All we have is God’s, and he is the one who giveth and the one who taketh away.

And yet we feel betrayed. How can we forgive betrayal?

God’s Word says:

Be strong in the Lord. Ephesians 6:10.

I can do all things. Philippians 4:13.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only son. John 3:16.

How can we forgive betrayal? We cannot. Luke 12:51 tells us Jesus did not come to bring peace, but division. When we expect God to make our lives perfect, we misunderstand God.

Jesus’ words in Luke 23:34 give us our ultimate example. Jesus hung on the cross, betrayed by humanity, and carrying the shame of the world on his shoulders. He could have cried, “God, none of this is my fault. I should not be here.” Rather, he was more understanding, and we hear him pray, “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

No matter how deeply our betrayal cuts into us, our only answer is to hand it to God. He is the only one who can forgive what we cannot bear.

When the world turns on us, we should turn to God.
