Putting on God’s Style

What does it mean to look like a man or woman of God?

Ah, we can picture it. It must be the televangelist on the megaplatform wearing a shiny suit and sporting good hair. Of course, that’s what God wants us to look like—

On second thought, God must love the fire-spouting preacher, laying down the law and setting the unsaved onto the road to glory—

Or better, the rough-sleeping inner-city evangelist who owns nothing and serves each night in the food line feeding the poor—

Okay, none of those are wrong, but let’s take another look through the eyes of 1 Peter 3:4:

“Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.”

People see with human (natural) eyes ...

The fine suit? Of course God loves the man we see on our TV screen, or he wouldn’t be so financially blessed.

Turning people from their sins? That’s the epitome of Paul’s teachings in the Word.

Feeding the poor? Even Jesus did that …

God sees with spiritual eyes, and he perceives the person inside. He looks for a gentle and quiet spirit. To our Father, when we are kind to others and don’t try to steal the spotlight, we are clothed in an imperishable beauty, and to him, we become very precious.

Let’s put on God’s style. Treat others well. Spend time in prayer. Read the Bible. Let others take the credit. Be the person God wants us to be.

When we have Jesus inside, we begin to look like our Lord in what we say and do.
