Grab a newspaper.
Any edition will do. Yeah, that one. Sunday, Tuesday evening, yeah, that one.
Open it. Point to a headline. Read it aloud.
Did you feel uplifted? Angered? Or did you sigh at the evil that seems to have overtaken the world?
It’s true that the disaster headlines grab our attention. We want to know about the latest earthquake, who was killed in the most recent shooting, or the financial disasters about to bring down the powerhouse players at the top.
God says to quit it! That’s not the best way to live. His Word gives us a better way.
Ephesians 4:29 tells us how to display our Christian standards in our daily lives.
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
What is corrupting talk? Anything that changes us from good to bad, whether in our morals, manners, or actions. In other words, don’t suggest wrong things! Just don’t! God says to toss it out the window.
Instead, we are given three positive standards to create a new buzz to lift our spirits every day.
Positive Standard No. 1:
Build people up. Remind them of the good they do. Focus on their strengths, not their weaknesses.
Positive Standard No. 2:
Leave the past in the past. Don’t bring up old hurts. Let them go like water off a duck’s back.
Positive Standard No. 3:
Before you speak, ask yourself, will this make someone feel better? If not, DON’T SAY IT. Was that clear enough? Our hurtful words need to be squashed under our heel and NOT SPOKEN ALOUD.
There. You’ve got it. Now get out there and create a new buzz for good with everyone you meet.
What we say reflects who we are. Let’s reflect Jesus with the words we speak.
