People are fun.
That’s why we pay money to hear a comic crack jokes, why The Tonight Show stole the ratings, and why we hang out with friends who don’t have our best interests at heart.
Scrr-aaa-tch!
Don’t have our best interests at heart? They are our friends. They like us, and we like them. Of course they have our best interests at heart.
Is that so?
Mystery No. 1:
1 Corinthians 15:33 suggests we look at our friends objectively.
“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’ ”
The mystery is cast aside. Our rowdy friend isn’t going to improve because they spend time with us. It’s the other way around. We will become like them.
Mystery No. 2:
Proverbs 16:28 reminds us that the friends we choose impact our lives in every possible way.
“A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.”
Why is he the life of the party? How has she become the “go to” girl? What’s below the surface is no longer a mystery when we look closer.
Mystery No. 3:
Psalm 37:3 is our neon sign telling us there’s a better friendship we can depend on.
“Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.”
We want a friend we can depend on. A new life. New connections. A better way of living. It’s no mystery that we need God.
We desire a certain element of safety around us. People are important, and when we find good friends, we should hold them close.
God will be the best friend we have ever known. When we struggle with life, God is there to fill in the gaps.
Jesus is closer than a brother and a companion we can depend on.
