Our Standard of Good

English Audio Version

Good is a word often overused.

Our meal tastes good.

We enjoy a good movie.

There are good people . . . and some not so good.

We can have good intentions, a good heart, and even a good time on the town.

What does it mean to do good for someone? What’s involved in us stepping outside our sphere of enjoyment and enabling someone else to rise to our level of life?

What sacrifices are we expected to take to help someone else enjoy a better experience in living? What are we willing to give up?

Galatians 6:10 says it’s not as difficult as we might imagine.

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

Four words in this verse clarify what God expects from us.

“. . . as we have opportunity . . .”

God doesn’t expect us to stay home from work . . . postpone our vacation plans . . . miss the kids’ soccer games . . . none of that! God understands we have a life gifted to us by him, and we are encouraged to live it out in the enjoyment of his blessings.

We are to look for the opportunities to help others . . . do good to them . . . to make their lives more pleasant.

How? Here are ten ways:

  • Increase your $$ tip to the waiter.
  • Hold the door for a stranger.
  • Say thank you when you aren’t expected to.
  • Take time to listen to your coworker on your break.
  • Hug your children . . . twice.
  • Greet your neighbor . . . even when they haven’t mowed their grass.
  • Be patient in traffic and leave your hand off the horn.
  • Drop a $5 bill in the donation jar.
  • Offer to walk an elderly neighbor’s dog.
  • Pay for someone’s lunch without telling them.

See? It’s easy. You give up little, but you do need to search for the opportunities and take them when God provides them.

Doing good is God’s expectation, especially to our Christian family.
