Testing the Waters

English Audio Version

Avid sports enthusiasts are a hardy bunch.

Snow and ice don’t slow them down. Neither does a hot summer day.

As one shoe company says, they just get out there and do it!

All of it! Horseback, on a 4-wheeler, or on four smaller wheels, a skateboard. They get outdoors and have fun.

It’s the water people who must be especially careful. Early season swimmers and surfers must make sure the waves are up to temperature. To swim or surf too early without adequate protection can lead to a disastrous end.

It’s important to test the waters, and if the temps are welcoming, jump on in!

That’s exactly how our Christian walk is. When we find a church that teaches the Word, a minister who presents the truth, and friends who buoy us spiritually, that’s our time to jump in and surf the welcoming waters.

Paul reveals this truth in 1 Thessalonians 5:21.

“But test everything; hold fast what is good.”

It’s a pertinent lesson. The challenge is how to come up with good standards, ones that will weed out the bad, to winnow the chaff, in farming terms.

The solution comes in the Bible. When we immerse ourselves in the Word of God, we’ll learn the nature of the Father, and we’ll understand what he considers acceptable and right.

We’ll become adept at testing the waters around us, learning what’s safe and what’s not. We’ll recognize good teaching, become attuned to the truth, and lift up others to spiritual success in their walk with Jesus.

Ready, set, go, Christian enthusiasts! We’re a hardy bunch. Let’s get out there and do it!
