What do we mean by a virtuous woman? We don’t use that word much anymore, not in its adjective form, anyway. Yet, it’s filled with so much impact that we need to look at it closely.
Meaning No. 1: having or showing high moral standards
Meaning No. 2: chaste (righteous, good, pure, exemplary)
If we want to bandy around some synonyms, we might throw out saintly, angelic, upstanding, principled, or ethical. All of these apply. A virtuous woman is an upstanding, principled, and ethical woman.
That’s the sort of woman we all want to know.
Proverbs 31:10 tells us that if we find a saintly woman, we are to do whatever is necessary to hold on to her.
"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.”
Ruth 1:16-17 reveals the impact of a virtuous woman. Others will emulate and desire to follow in her footsteps.
“Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”
Romans 12:10 gives us the highest standard for a virtuous woman, to hold others in high honor, even above herself.
“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”
1 Peter 4:8 lays bare how to hold a virtuous woman. We must love her deeply so that she feels protected and treasured.
“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”
Love is a reward we all search for. When we find it in a good person, we have a treasure that makes our life worthwhile and rewarding, no matter what troubles come our way.
