What’s a Christian? We’ve had two millennia to figure that out. Yet we still have trouble grasping what it’s all about.
Pomp and circumstance, that’s got to be it. As long as we cover the rituals and say the right prayers, we’re bound to get it right.
Aren’t we?
Or, maybe it’s the emotion that carries the day. If we get into our salvation with enough enthusiasm, God will notice and grant us entrance into his heavenly presence.
Here’s a hint on how to become the Christian that exemplifies the example of Christ. We find it in Matthew 22:36-40.
Let’s break it down into manageable morsels.
Morsel Number 1:
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” (Verse 36)
Instead of Teacher, we could call him Master of All Creation. The Law is the Law of Moses, found in the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament.
Morsel Number 2:
And [Jesus] said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Verse 37)
The entire Law of Moses is based on the premise that we must totally commit to the Lord with every ounce of our being.
Morsel Number 3:
“This is the great and first commandment.” (Verse 38)
Committing wholly unto God comes before all other good things we might do as followers of Christ.
Morsel Number 4:
“And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Verse 39)
If we love the people around us (respect, provide for, and aid in their time of need), then by the nature of our compassion, we will love God.
Morsel Number 5:
“On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Verse 40)
If we skip either of these two things, we’ve lost out on the meaning of Christianity. Every righteous intent and indignant tirade is chaff in the wind, dispersed as if it never was, without love for God and for our fellow man.
Two thousand years? Bah! It only takes two minutes to learn how to live like Christ. If we want to truly emulate Jesus, all we need to do is listen to what he said.
1. Love God.
2. Love the people at our side.
If we do those two things, everything else will fall into place, and people will recognize that our Christian testimony is the real deal.
It’s the love that Christ lived that drew the world unto him. When Christ is reflected in us, the world won’t be able to keep away.
