Flower seeds are God’s wonderful invention. Scatter them about, and they spring up like… well, like wildflowers.
There’s a reason we use that phrase. Drive down a country road in spring, and wildflowers are everywhere. In Texas, the Department of Transportation goes a step further. They don’t trust nature (as good as nature is). They spread as much as 30,000 pounds of wildflower seeds along the state’s highways each year.
Those of us who are leaders in the church need to let our lives bloom like wildflowers with the beauty of living for our Lord. We find our best blooms (deacon qualifications) in 1 Timothy 3:8-13:
Wildflower Bloom No. 1:
A deacon should be honorable, respectable, and dignified in all areas of life.
Wildflower Bloom No. 2:
A deacon should be trustworthy in all he or she says and does.
Wildflower Bloom No. 3:
A deacon should not struggle with addiction to alcohol or other strong drink.
Wildflower Bloom No. 4:
A deacon should not be focused on money for personal glorification.
Wildflower Bloom No. 5:
A deacon should hold to the true gospel, both in beliefs and in behavior.
Wildflower Bloom No. 6:
A deacon should be blameless in background, reputation, and theological position.
Wildflower Bloom No. 7:
A deacon should be godly, respectable, and dignified.
Wildflower Bloom No. 8:
A deacon should be the spouse of one marriage partner.
Wildflower Bloom No. 9:
A deacon should be the spiritual leader of the household, managing both children and family affairs well.
What’s the wildflower part of this? Quantity, for certain. We should bloom in every part of who we are. There’s more, however. Wildflowers don’t have to be cultivated. They just… bloom. That’s the way Christ should be in our lives. He should just be there, because we are so closely bonded with him, body and soul.
There’s one more thing to consider: When we bloom with God’s wildflowers, we’ll scatter seeds all around us, creating more blooms everywhere we go.
Let’s bloom with the qualities of Christ so that others can see us in full flower and find Jesus through us.
