Prayer and Petition

“Ah, God knows what I need.”

Have you heard that one? It seems logical, doesn’t it?

We serve an all-knowing Father, one who has his thumb in every pie. There’s nothing that transpires without his permission.

Every sparrow that falls from the sky, he knows. Every hair … you know the story.

So, yes, God knows what we need.

However, is that enough? We barrel ahead in life, blind to what’s ahead, like a car on a roller coaster, screaming along the track … oh, yeah, that’s the life for us …

NOT! NOPE! NEVER IN A MINUTE!

See, God might know, but he wants us to take a stake in our fortunes, also. He desires us to recognize our situation, make a choice that aligns with his Word, and present our needs to him.

Philippians 4:6 (NIV) says:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

A roller coaster is only fun when we know that the safety measures necessary to protect us are all in place. If we board and are told that only half of us will safely reach our destination, how much fun will all the screaming be?

Life’s roller coaster is better with safety measures in place. Prayers. Petitions. All presented to God with a good measure of thanksgiving to incline his heart toward us.

That can sound manipulative, but think of your children. If they want something, and they start the request with, “You know that I love you and think you’re the best parent of any of my friends …”

You’re seeing it. God is the same.

So, the next time the wheels on your roller coaster car begin to whine with speed, don’t worry. Drop your anxiety off the side. Let despair waft into the wind. Instead, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your needs to God.

He loves you. He wants to provide for you. He simply wants you to ask.

Do it today.
