In the early days of home phone service, there was only one ring tone available. If we were on a party line, a pattern of rings indicated who was to pick up. Still, the ring tone was the same.
However, now we can customize our ring tones by caller. Mom gets the barking dog, son gets a metallic rock band, and our spouse? The theme to Love Story warbles its melodic strains.
What ring tone do we assign to God?
In other words, how can we know God is calling? It’s the most vital question we’ll ever answer. In Jeremiah 22:2, the prophet tells the king of Judah to set his ring tone so that when the Lord speaks, he’ll know to pick up and answer.
This is an especially powerful message. The previous four kings of Judah had ignored their party line, assuming the voice of the Lord was speaking to someone else. Their actions brought about the ruin of the people.
If we ignore the voice of the Lord, disaster looms in our future. We won’t prosper, and there’ll be no good found in anything we put our hand to. We don’t have to be in a position of power for this verse to apply to us, either, for the Lord instructs the king, his servants, and all the people to fix their ring tones to be one with his voice.
Can we recognize the voice of the Lord when he speaks to us? Do we have our ring tone set to identify his call? Do we know him when he pleads for us to do his work?
When the Lord speaks to us, we do well to listen to the sound of his voice. Only then will we be able to follow the footsteps of Jesus and lead the lost to Christ.
