Doing It God’s Way

We’ve heard it said, if not to us, then to someone else.

“There’s your way, then there’s the right way.”

What does that mean, anyway? Can it be as obvious as it sounds?

Are we always doing things the wrong way?

Are we the goof-ups, and everyone else has life down pat?

Perhaps, but here’s the way to look at this.

We’re still learning that there’s a better way out there.

Matthew 6:7-8 says:

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

How’s that? Fancy prayers aren’t the ones God wants to hear?

Our pastor, the five-minute prayers at dismissal times … the mid-meal prayer that goes on until the food gets cold … the hours on our knees?

It’s not me saying this, it’s the Book of Matthew, Chapter 6, those two verses we just read. Do not heap up empty phrases.

So, yes, pray for the starving and lost across the globe, just not for the sake of people hearing you pray.

Open your heart before God, but not just to let others know you have a contrite heart.

Be thankful to God at mealtimes, just not until the food is cold.

Let’s read that last part again.

“For your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

He’s God, after all. Let’s trust him for our care. Come to him in humbleness, make our requests, then get on about the business he’s given us to do.

Our prayers are sweet before God. Let’s send them up HIS way.

Excerpt of the Day

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
