Brain Freeze

Think of ice cream, cold soda, and coke floats. We dig in, chug them down, and leave the smiling residue on our faces.

What do we get in return? A brain freeze.

Brain freezes are very real. What causes them? It’s our body trying to warm the roof of our mouth. The blood vessels dilate, triggering pain receptors, and in the body’s confusion, we feel the pain in our forehead.

Brain freeze. It only lasts half a minute or so, and for most people, it’s an exhilarating experience associated with the food we’re eating. When we fill up on ice cream, our brain freeze is half the fun.

How do we get a brain freeze from God? The same way. In fact, Paul encourages us to strive for a brain freeze, to consume so much of God that we hurt with exhilarating pain at the awesomeness of the Father.

In Colossians 1:9 we read how we can experience Paul’s brain freeze. We simply dig in; chug it down; and smile in exhilaration.

Brain Freeze Step #1 - Dig in:

Paul encourages us to break out the ice cream. He knew how much the church at Colosse needed his spiritual support, and he wanted them filled with the knowledge of Christ.

Brain Freeze Step #2 - Chug It Down:

Paul wants us to eat up as quickly as we can. When we consume as much of God as we can force inside, we will churn with excitement at his presence.

Brain Freeze Step #3 – Smile in Exhilaration:

Paul knows the outcome of filling up on the Lord. We will receive wisdom and spiritual understanding, and we will have the same joy Paul experienced when he first came to the Lord. We will receive a brain freeze.

We can all experience a spiritual brain freeze. When we find truth and consume it as rapidly as possible, the reality of God in our lives will cause our bodies to react, triggering receptors that we didn’t know were there. We will be supercharged for him, and we’ll look forward to filling up on God over and over, because we’ll know the exhilaration of spending time with him.

When we fill up on God, he will affect us in a profound way.

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
