“If you are lodged in the past, the future will slip past you, and along with it, your chances for success.”
(Proverbs 16:9 ESV)
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
Walking backwards is never a good idea.
The only way to see where we’re going is to face forward. Remember the story of Lot’s wife. As they were escaping the destruction of Sodom, she turned to see what she’d left behind, only to become a pillar of salt.
What’s back there is in the past. The doors are closed, the way is blocked, and we can’t return, no matter how hard we try.
Imagine a butterfly being chased by a bird and trying to get back inside its cocoon. It can’t do it. It might seem like a place of safety, but that opportunity has come and gone.
We can only move forward.
We plan, and the Lord establishes our steps. We can imagine what we want out of life, but our only assurance comes when we turn things over to God and forge ahead into our future.
