God’s Revelation When We Have Money

So, you got a bonus at work.

What to spend it on? Family vacation, the church building fund, perhaps that new boat you’ve been wanting?

Here’s what 1 Timothy 6:17-19 has to say:

“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.”

There’s a lot to unpack in this passage, so let’s break it down.

Revelation No. 1: “… not to be haughty …”

No “ha, ha” or looking down our noses at others. Don’t do it!

Revelation No. 2: “… nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches …”

Root your hopes in God, not in your bank accounts.

Revelation No. 3: “… to do good …”

Use your money to make other people’s lives better, not just your own.

Revelation No. 4: “… be rich in good works …”

Not just do good but do it often. The list should be long.

Revelation No. 5: “… be generous …”

Open your wallet. Let your money flow to good causes.

Revelation No. 6: “… ready to share …”

Do it with a smile. Say, “Sure, how much do you need?”

Revelation No. 7: “… storing up … a good foundation for the future …”

You are building a deep well of good that will come back to you in this world and the next.

Revelation No. 8: “… take hold of that which is truly life.”

True life is found in Christ, in family, in relationships, in doing for others.

When God’s financial blessings are shared with those in need, everyone benefits, especially the one that chooses to let them go.
