Business Smart

English Audio Version

One Christian teaching instructs us to sell all we have and give to the poor.

Does that mean we should live on the dole, forego any of life’s luxuries, and never plan for the future?

Is paycheck to paycheck good enough, if we trust in God to meet our every need?

Proverbs 27:23 suggests otherwise.

“Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds.”

When this proverb was written, mankind was mostly agricultural. True city dwellers were in the minority. Most people grew their own food and would have understood this verse in a way we can’t today.

Let’s paraphrase the proverb into modern-day language.

“Regularly reevaluate your investments in the Dow Jones, and make sure to build your nest egg so that you have enough in reserve for any possible setbacks in life.”

How can we fund the needs of the church if we are living paycheck to paycheck? God needs us to be business smart, to invest our funds wisely, and to ensure our family is provided for. Then we can explore where our excess funds can be put to good use.

Becoming business smart for God allows us to give a greater measure to his kingdom. Let’s build our investments so that we have enough to offer the excess unto the Lord.

Generosity is sharing what God has allowed us to accumulate so that others can rise above their desperate circumstances.
