Spending the King’s Cash

To be a king is to have all the power. All the cash, too.

The king (sultan) of Brunei rules with absolute power. Everything in his country is at his disposal, at his command, and within his reach. He is denied nothing.

The king (also a sultan) of Oman is the same. All the cash is his, enough to do pretty much anything he wants. A big boat? Done. Palaces? He’s there. Fine cars? He has them all.

Then there are the absolute monarchs ruling Saudi Arabia, Swaziland, and Vatican City. Yes, Vatican City. They’re kings, all, having all the power, and controlling all the cash.

Caesar was the king of Rome. In the days of our Lord, Caesar spoke words, and people’s lives were changed. Caesar slammed down his scepter, and armies marched to war. Caesar gripped his hand into a fist, and his treasure chests swelled with cash.

Christ is the supreme king of all creation. He’s the sultan of the world, the monarch of all that was, all that is, and all that ever will be. He’s the caesar of the old world, and the majesty of the new. All money, investments, and goods are his to give unto his children.

We get to spend the king’s cash. We get to give it away. In fact, we must give it away. Why’s that so hard? After all, it was never ours in the first place.

A good example is our tithes and offerings to the Church. What’s God’s was never ours to claim, and when we give it back to him, we’re not spending our money, we’re giving God’s money back to the Father.

The same is true of the time we spend teaching Sunday school, visiting the sick in the hospital, or reading our Bibles. We’re spending the King’s cash, not ours. It’s already his.

Mark 12:17 tells us:

“Jesus said to them, ‘Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God’s.’ ”

God has absolute power. Everything in creation is at his disposal, at his command, and within his reach. He chooses to share it with us, and when he asks for a little of it back, we’re not giving up anything. It’s all the King’s cash, and it simply flows back to him.

What we give to God was already his. We’ve just shifted its possession from our hands to God’s.
