Working nine to five.
Many of us do that just to pay the bills.
The idea is that we give up part of our day, and someone gives us money in return. We may not begin at nine and end at five, but the concept is the same.
We want benefits, as that makes our paycheck stretch further. Dental, bonus time off, and two weeks each summer. That’s what we’re talking about.
If we get a company car or a housing allowance, we’re cashing in on the gold.
Here’s where we sometimes slip up. WE work 40 hours. WE have a dental policy. It’s OUR bonus time off, and those two weeks? They are OURS to plan any way we wish.
We forget about Jeremiah 5:24:
“They do not say to themselves, ‘Let us fear the Lord our God, who gives autumn and spring rains in season, who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.’”
Will your paycheck get earned by itself? Not for most of us. We must show up each day and choose the job with the best benefits, even if we must drive further, take a continuing education class, or do something other than our preferred occupation.
What we cannot forgo is to recognize the One who enables us to work that job, who is our opportunity provider, and who keeps our employer in business.
Nine to five. Or two to ten. Or even the graveyard shift. Our pink slip … well, we don’t want to think about that.
Fearing the Lord means to show him respect, offer him our gratitude, and place our trust in him.
He is the One who guides our feet, and in him our every supply is met.
We should offer praise to his name.
