Stumbling Into Strength

Hike a mountain trail. Rocky road ice cream will develop a new meaning for you. A stone beneath every step. More obstructions than you can shake a stick at.

You will stumble, and there’s a good chance you will need to pick yourself up and start along the trail once more.

Mountain trails can be dangerous, yet those who hike them regularly become stronger by the mile. That rock that twisted an ankle just months before becomes a launching pad for a fresh leap forward along the trail.

Our heart becomes stronger, our eyes identify obstructions sooner, and even our upper body develops additional strength, enabling us to maintain balance where we would have fallen before.

Our Christian life is like walking a mountain trail. We can’t hunker in our churches and prayer closets. We must stumble, learn how to get back up, and develop spiritual muscles in the process.

Proverbs 18:10 tells us:

“The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

Where do we find God’s fortified tower? On the mountain of God. We run to him … up his holy mountain … and build our spiritual muscles in the process.

Here’s what’s key in this verse:

We might be filled with fear; the world might be beat us down; we might not be able to see a way through on our own; but when we RUN to God for protection—and he will provide his protection to us when we ask—we are developing a stronger heart to love those around us, better eyes to see the pitfalls along the path sooner, and upper body strength to shatter the roadblocks of the devil.

When we run to the Lord and claim his protection, we emerge as warriors in his name. We may stumble along the trail that leads to him, but we are stumbling into strength when we keep our eyes fixed on God.
