How much do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
That’s from Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sonnet No. 43.
In her sonnet, Ms. Browning tells us the depths of her love, how it affects her daily thoughts, and that her love will continue after death, if God wills.
Let’s change Ms. Browning’s question a bit.
How much does God love us?
We can find the answer to that in Ephesians 2:4-7.
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
God’s love for us grows richer as this passage continues. The underlining isn’t in the original, but it shows that our God desires to do exceeding good things to reveal his eternal and unbounding love for his creation.
God’s love flows to us in three stages of everlasting compassion and love.
The 1st Stage of God’s Everlasting Love:
God loved us when we were caked with sin.
“ … even when we were dead in our trespasses …”
The 2nd Stage of God’s Everlasting Love:
God gives us a place at the side of Jesus.
“… seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus …”
The 3rd Stage of God’s Everlasting Love:
God’s love flows our direction through the eternal ages to come.
“… so that in the coming ages he might show us the immeasurable riches of his grace …”
Elizabeth Barrett Browning expressed eight ways her love flowed from her unto her beloved.
God says there’s no end to the love he showers over his children when they call him Father.
God is rich in mercy and love, and he wants to share it with us.
