We call God “The Great Mystery.”
Or perhaps we say he’s the “Big Man Upstairs.”
How about these: The Unseen, the Unknowable, or the Great Spirit in the Sky.
How can we identify with a spirit? We’re flesh and blood. What we want to know is how God is like us.
What are our connection points? How are we the same? What do we feel, experience, and enjoy that’s the same as God?
Psalm 145:8 gives us the definitive view of God.
“The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
Let’s look at 4 Truths About God one at a time.
Our First Truth: The Lord is gracious.
Imagine Southern hospitality. We’re invited in, told to take off our shoes, and we’re given a tall glass of iced tea.
Yeah, that’s God.
Our Second Truth: The Lord is merciful.
Picture standing before a judge. We did the crime. The book is about to land on us. Then the judge says, “I’m giving you a second chance.”
That’s exactly what God does.
Our Third Truth: The Lord is slow to anger.
You crash your grandfather’s favorite model airplane. He sits down with you and takes out a tube of glue. Then he helps you reassemble the parts and praises you for a job well done.
Imagine God doing that with your life. He does that exactly.
Our Fourth Truth: The Lord abounds in steadfast love.
You get a new puppy and it messes the floor. You don’t like the mess, but you love the puppy, so you clean it up. And the next time and the next time.
You’re seeing it now. There’s no end to God’s love.
God is not a fire-breathing dragon ready to scorch his children. His arms are open for us to come to him.
Jesus treasures us even when we are hard to love.
