A seasoned runner likes a paved path for a reason.
Sleek asphalt provides a predictable surface. There’s nothing in the way, no stones under our feet, and no roots to catch us as we run.
A forest path presents a different situation. Even if the surface is cleared, and packed sand is leveled over the substrate, there’s no guarantee that dangerous obstacles won’t work their way through.
Or that the surface of the sand won’t wear away to expose what’s underneath.
Each person that passes down that forest path takes a portion of the sand with them. Rain can wash the sand away, and often, with the passing of time, the soil and sand begin to compact, forced ever deeper.
The roots and stones remain, ready to grab at our feet once again.
It’s asphalt that gives us confidence, that allows us to run without the fear of roots tripping us up. The protection we gain from our protective covering allows us to run faster and farther without having to focus on every footstep we take.
Proverbs 3:26 gives us our sure covering:
“For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.”
When we run life’s race following the Master, he will keep our path prepared. The roots that would trip us will be vanquished, and the stones that would obstruct our path will no longer be there.
God prepares the path for us when we walk the direction he desires, and his hand protects us along the way.
