Bypassing Burnout

English Audio Version

A post on a popular social media site gave this advice for being successful:

Never give 100% on the job. Only give 50%, then if you push it to 75% one day, you’ll get cheers, and 25% will be brushed aside as an off day.

There’s some truth to that. We must learn to set boundaries, or we’ll become the go-to guy who gets all the problems stacked on our desk.

It’s called Pacing Our Success. It’s a way of bypassing burnout, of doing what we can, taking a little recovery time, and getting back to business.

Even Jesus took time out from the crowd. Luke 15:16 tells us our Lord frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray.

2 Thessalonians 3:13 gives the rest of us an inverted directive cautioning us in our walk with Christ:

“As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good.”

At first glance, we might read into this that we are to do good always, without ceasing, no matter how exhausted we feel.

The middle of the verse is equally important.

Do not grow weary.

Admittedly, that four-word phrase can’t stand alone. We must act as brothers, and we must do good. Those aren’t up for debate. Burnout, however, can decimate even the most diligent believer.

Taking time for ourselves to rebuild our stamina is as vital as the good work we do.

Let’s give 100% to Jesus, no argument there. But don’t forget that even Jesus took a little time away. He needed to renew his strength, and so do we.

We shine best for Christ when we are refreshed in him.
