Getting What We Want

English Audio Version

At the end of life, the winner is the one with the best toys.

Respect comes through the house we live in and the car we drive.

Our social standing is our badge of honor, and if we have a house in the mountains and one at the beach, no one can top what we’ve accomplished.

Hold it! All that might be true, if we’re speaking from the world’s vantage point. A Christian’s outlook should be dramatically different.

Matthew 6:33 points us another direction.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Does this mean that, yes, we’re promised all the toys, including the house on the beach? Not really. Not at all, in fact.

Let’s see what it really says.

First, seek first the kingdom of God.

Second, all these things will be added to you.

See? When we seek the kingdom of God, that’s what we’ll begin to desire. It’s the things of the kingdom that will be added to us, not social standing and a place in the mountains.

Certainly, God may give us respect in the world, a nice house, and a fine car, but that’s not our Christian birthright. Our honor comes from the kingdom and the righteousness found in serving him.

We can indeed have everything we want, when what we desire is the righteousness of God.
