A Godly Woman

In 2016, the United States almost got its first female president.

We were that close. So close that many people held out hope even after the November voting wound down that a recount might sway the election from one side to another.

Who knows whether Hilary Clinton would have been a successful president? She never got the chance to give it a try. There was a woman in the Bible who did, however, and she was a rip-roaring success in everything she did.

Judges 4-5 are what we can think of as the Victory for Woman chapters. They start off with Deborah, who was a prophetess. She was married (to Lapidoth) and held the highest political office of the day. Deborah presided over the people of Israel.

Judges 4:5 tells us:

“...And the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.”

Lest we see Deborah as living in luxury, a royal personage, we must picture where she announced God’s commands to those who came before her. Verse 5 also tells us:

“She dwelt under the palm tree.”

We read that right. The most powerful woman in Israel sat under a tree to dispense the wisdom of God unto those who came to her seeking God’s direction.

At a time when Israel was facing defeat from Jabin, the king of Canaan, Deborah enlisted the help of Jael (another woman, by the way) to bring down Sisera, Jabin’s captain of the host.

One woman standing on the Word has great power. Two women in cahoots, with God’s help, are a fearful force indeed.

Judges 5:1-2 begins the song of triumph sung for Deborah and Jael and their success in leading Israel to defeat the king of Canaan. All of Israel rejoiced in their feminine victory. In the King James Version, we read:

“Then sang Deborah…on that day, saying, Praise you the Lord for the avenging of Israel…”

Let’s not discount the power of women. Whether they reside in a palace or sit under a tree, they have the potential to let God take them to unimaginable heights for him.

When God moves on a woman to do his will, the world had better watch out.
