Our Hand on the Plow

We love the idea of the genie in the bottle. The little dude with all the power to grant our every wish is released by us, and in gratitude, he offers us our fondest hopes and dreams at no cost to us.

We’re dreaming. We do know that, right? We have to bust a few knuckles if we want to achieve the best that life has to offer. How have we heard it said? Experience is the best teacher? Failure is only failure if we don’t get back up? No pain, no gain?

The Bible has its own version of these catchy sayings.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us there is something to the genie myth, for we must hope and believe we have a supernatural benefactor working for our good.

“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

Philippians 4:13 makes it clear our blessings from the Lord are not magic gifts.

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Galatians 6:7 says our behaviors, intents, and desires play into what the Lord can do in our lives.

“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.”

Revelation 2:10 says that whatever comes out of life’s bottle, Christ will reward us with something that will make all of our trials as if they never were.

“Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

Let’s pull on our gloves, put our hand to the plow, and jump in the driver’s seat. There’s work to be done for the kingdom of God, and it’s our place to play our part.

Instead of moaning about what God hasn’t done for us, we need to put on our work belt and bang a few nails in his name.
