God in Our Midst

God desires to dwell with his people. It is the very reason he created us. We read of his intent in Isaiah 57:15:

“For thus says the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”

We find three overriding truths in this verse that we can carry forward into our Christian walk. They give us the spiritual foundation upon which our faith is God is founded.

Truth No. 1:

God always is, always was, and always will be. He is “the high and lofty one who inhabits eternity.” God is a being of the ages, for he lived in the ages of time before man, and he will continue to exist for all the ages that are to come. There is no beginning and there is no end to our God.

Truth No. 2:

We see the illustration of God’s true nature in this verse. His name is holy. Merriam-Webster defines holy as “exalted or worthy of complete devotion.” There is no other to whom we can offer our praise, for our devotion must be complete unto the Lord. There is no room for other gods.

Truth No. 3:

God chooses humanity. He looks among us for the humble of spirit, the ones who are contrite of heart; and he lifts us to his side; and he dwells in us. God wants to be part of our lives. He wants us at his side. He chooses us. Our opportunity to respond to him is now.

Finding God is less about finding him than realizing he is already at our side.
