Football teams do one thing better than just about anyone else. They assign positions to players by their abilities. Some people are perfect for blockers. Others kick well. And then there’s the quarterback, the guy who runs with the ball. He has to have it all. He needs agility to avoid being tackled, arm strength to throw the ball at high velocity, bulk to deflect other players, competitiveness to work harder than everyone else, aptitude to retain and use as many as 250 plays, stature to look over the other players, and above all, good vision to scan the field and make good use of all available opportunities.
In other words, our QUARTERBACK needs to be a natural leader.
Let’s look at our QUARTERBACK God:
Q – He is QUICK on the field. Proverbs 3:26 says:
“For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.”
U – His strength is our ULTIMATE standard. Isaiah 41:10 tells us:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
A – He enables us to run ALL plays through his power and his strength. 2 Corinthians 3:5 shows us:
“Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.”
R – He REVEALS his masterful plays on the field. 1 John 3:20-21 is our instruction book:
“For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God.”
T – He sees TRIPLE plays where no one else does. Romans 15:13 points our eyesight down the field:
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
E – He gives us his ENERGY through the Father. Philippians 4:13 is our personal trainer:
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
R – He RELATES his instructions through his coach’s expertise. Hebrews 13:6 is our boast:
“So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’ ”
B – He make us BRAVE against all opponents. 1 John 4:18 dismisses fear:
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
A – He is the coach that ALWAYS has our back. 1 John 3:22 explains:
“And whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.”
C – He creates CONFIDENCE in his team. Proverbs 28:26 applauds his calls:
“Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.”
K – He KNOWS the game is today, and it requires everything we can give each and every moment. James 4:13-15 expounds for us:
“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’ ”
Where will our Father assign us on the field of life? Are we a mighty prayer warrior, ready to block a rush from the opposing team? Or can we see trouble before it gets here, and help others call a change in play?
Christ is our natural leader. He’s in charge of the ball. Let’s jump in and follow him all the way.
When we play ball with Jesus as our captain, we’ll win the game every time.
