Grandparent Love

Grandchildren get the best sort of love. While a parent must set the boundaries, and a sibling is often little more than an irritation, a grandparent offers something no one else can: grandparent love, the sugar-coated kind.

Sugar-coated love from a grandparent is one that doesn’t have to conform to practical norms. Make the stuffed animal bigger, bigger, bigger, until it barely fits into the car. Three scoops of ice cream? Certainly! And bedtimes, well, there’s no such thing with sugar-coated love.

God the Father is really a grandparent to us, many times over. Generations over, in fact. How much love must he be ready to shower onto us?

Let’s see how sweet the love of our Lord can be:

1 John 1:9 is our lollipop, straight sugar, flavored with God’s forgiveness and righteousness.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

James 5:16 is molten chocolate cake, better when shared.

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

1 Corinthians 10:13 takes on the essence of Madeira cake, with the slightest hint of lemon.

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Psalm 32:5 tastes of banana pudding where we uncover the goodness of the Lord one layer at a time.

“I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’ and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.”

Revelation 5:8 is a tort cake, lifting layers upon layers of praise unto God.

“And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.”

Hebrews 10:22 tempts us like maple taffy on a stick, rolled in sugar crystals.

“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”

1 Corinthians 6:19 reminds us of baklava, originating in a distant land, but offered to us as perfection personified.

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own.”

Romans 10:9 is our ice cream on our apple pie. One is filled with the warm fruit of God’s love, and the other is cold, sugary sweetness that makes our pie better.

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

How much does God love us? Like a grandparent, he loves us, with sugar-coated love that never ceases showering gifts onto us.

It’s good to be a child of the almighty God of the universe, because his gifts keep getting better and better every time.
