God’s Knickknack Shelf

We’ve seen in the supermarket tabloids the unusual things celebrities collect. One wild example comes from Jay Leno of The Tonight Show fame, who owns well over 100 exotic and expensive cars, and nearly that many motorcycles. Of course, Jay has money to burn. Most of us can’t afford the upkeep on that many automobiles, much less the purchase cost.

Other people with money or fame might have numerous houses, closets swelling with designer clothes, or jewelry to bling our eyes.

The rest of us collect salt shakers, license plates, or football jerseys. These things give us enjoyment, sometimes in the collecting, and other times in the using. Whichever, we load our knickknack shelf until every inch is filled.

What does God collect? What fills his knickknack shelf? God certainly has money to burn. He can have whatever he wants. It’s all his, anyway.

Genesis 1:1 tells us:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Creation was at the discretion of the almighty Father. There was nothing he withheld from himself.  There was nothing he could not choose to have at his side for all time.

Isaiah 40:22 says:

“It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in.”

What does God choose among all creation to keep around him all the time? Anything he wants. It’s his right to pick and choose.

Yet, a portion of his creation fell away, going its own way, ignoring the love of the Father.

Romans 3:23 reveals:

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

In spite of our shortcomings, God reached out and chose us. Jay Leno paid thousands and thousands for his collection of new and vintage automobiles. God paid an even higher price for his collection.

John 3:16 shows us God’s true desire:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

God collects us. His children. His creation. We swell his knickknack shelf. We bling the world. We bring him enjoyment, both in the collecting and in the using. He loves to draw us in, and he equally loves to put us to work, bringing others into the fold.

We are where God finds his most special joy. He loves and treasures us, and no price is too high to pay to have us at his side.

When God draws us in, he finds his pleasure in anticipating our reunion with him.
