We don’t use the phrase The Old College Try much anymore, but it used to be wildly popular. It’s a slang expression, more of a cheer, actually, that we might call out to someone who’s struggling in a difficult situation.
For example, Mary has a project due on Monday, and there’s no way for her to complete it in time. Does she give up? Of course not. We encourage her to give it the old college try. We mean that our best effort is essential, and to give up is to admit defeat too early in the game.
The same is true when we walk with God. No matter how difficult it is to see the next step we need to take, we have to give it the old college try. If we do, the Lord will reward us for our effort and tenacity.
Deuteronomy 30:9-10 tells us the Lord will bless the actions of our hands and rejoice over us if we give our walk with him the old college try.
Of course, the Word says it differently. We are to hearken unto his voice, keep his commandments, and turn unto him with all our heart. Yet, we know that’s impossible. We can’t in ourselves be that perfect from day to day. We will continually struggle with the difficulty of raising ourselves to God’s standards.
God understands that. He also doesn’t want us to admit defeat when the going gets rough. He wants us to give it the old college try; and we’ll find him there to be our cheering section, our fallback team, and our right-hand man.
He’ll also reward us for our effort and tenacity. He’ll straighten our paths, enrich our livelihood, and lift us up above those who fail to recognize him.
All he wants is for us to give it all we’ve got, and trust him to help us through the most difficult times.
When we take one step toward him, the Lord will take two towards us.
