The White Horse and the Winepress

A white horse is the rarest beast of all. Because they are rare, they are revered in all cultures. In Greek mythology, Pegasus was a winged horse of palest white. Norse mythology portrays Odin riding Sleipnir, a white horse that was the best “among gods and men.” Slavic mythology tells of divining the future with a white horse. Look to Hindu mythology for the tenth incarnation of Vishnu to appear in the form of a white horse.

Yet there is one white horse that stands out among all others.

Revelation 19:11-21 tells of a white horse that will ride forth in the End Days, carrying Faith and Truth to the winepress of the Almighty God.

This white horse is in sharp contrast to the lowly beast Christ rode into Jerusalem. A donkey is considered a beast of burden, useful for ferrying about inanimate loads, or for doing the work no one else is willing to accept. No one expects a donkey to win a race, or to proudly pull a carriage down the finest avenues.

The white horse symbolizes a victorious Christ. He is no longer meek, bowing his head to the captor’s chain, and offering his back to the tormentor’s whip. His burden of a cross has been cast aside, and he prances with glory and power, shining victoriously for all to see.

From where does he gain this power? We look to the winepress of God.

From a winepress we draw the essence of the grape. Yet, it does not come to us easily. The grape must be battered, crushed, and the residue strained away. It takes a great deal of energy and commitment to operate a winepress. We know when someone has done so, because the resulting juices stain whatever they touch.

So, let’s return to Revelation 19. We have our white horse, and we have the armies of heaven, all arrayed in fine linen, white and pure. Atop our white horse rides Faith and Truth, embodied by the one called The Word of God. He rides forth to tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God.

Where do our grapes come from? In Gill’s Exposition of the Bible, we learn that the grapes are those that have adhered to Babylon, and have drunk the wine of her fornication. Their evil ways will be pressed, squeezed, and strained by the feet of The Word of God.

Christ will trample the sins of this world until they bother us no more. He will emerge triumphant before all creation, frightful to behold, and our eternal king.

Can we say that about Pegasus, Sleipnir, or the returning Vishnu?

When we want to see real power, let’s look to our awesome Lord.
