Screaming Like a Girl

The title of this article can have two completely different meanings, depending on whether we’re male or female. For the macho, masculine dude, to scream like a girl means to have no backbone, to have a streak of yellow down our spine, and to run in terror at the least provocation.

No one wants to scream like a girl.

However, to the modern woman, to scream like a girl means something totally different. It means to be assertive, to take on all comers, and to pursue our enemy until he is totally defeated (which also means, watch out, old boyfriends!).

We should all want to scream like a girl.

Which type of scream we let loose depends on which side we’re on.

Look at this prophetic word in Zephaniah 2:4.

“For Gaza shall be deserted, and Ashkelon shall become a desolation; Ashdod's people shall be driven out at noon, and Ekron shall be uprooted.”

We can break this verse into four parts: 1. Gaza shall be deserted 2. Ashkelon shall become a desolation 3. Ashdod’s people shall be driven out at noon 4. Ekron shall be uprooted.

This verse lists four of the five cities of the Philistines, indicating the whole territory will be decimated by the Israelites. However, let’s focus on Number 3. What makes Ashdod’s mention stand out above the others is the timing. It will happen at noon, the hottest time of the day, the most unlikely timing for a hostile attack.

Think of it, the surprise of being caught completely off guard, unable to prepare, and in desperation, doing the first thing that came to their minds. They must have turned tail and run, screaming like little girls in the face of overpowering odds.

Now think of the Israelites. They knew they were attacking at an unexpected time. The advantage was theirs, and they had to make the most of it. How could they take the enemy totally off guard?

They ran after the people of Ashdod screaming like girls.

Apparently there was a lot of screaming going on that day, and we see the results confirmed in 1 Samuel 5:6.

“But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.”

What can we learn from Ashdod? Girls rule. We must take the offensive in God’s name, and then we will be able to take on all comers, and pursue our enemy until he is totally defeated (and this has nothing to do with old boyfriends!).

When we fight for God, let’s do it with a cry of victory in his name.
