When we are in a desperate situation, we need a cry for help that others will understand. 9-1-1 has become the standard on land. However, when sailing at sea, the standard is the International Morse Code distress signal S-O-S.
People have associated the SOS signal (as it is normally written) with various phrases such as “save our ship” or “save our souls,” but the letters do not actually stand for anything. It is simply a nine element signal that is easily recognizable in times of distress.
No other Morse code symbol is so distinct, making it virtually impossible to mistake the SOS signal with any other.
God gives us an SOS signal that we can use when the worries of this world are about to overcome us. This signal will send our enemies running and bring help from the Lord our God.
Psalms 119:114-115 tells us God is there for us in our times of distress.
We can even drive the problems of this world back into the darkness from which they come.
How? By initiating our SOS signal.
How do we signal God's protecting hand over our lives? This passage gives us two ways:
First, we find our hope in his Word.
It is in God’s Word that we are inspired to find confidence in the Messiah, who is the author of our salvation; and in the Holy Spirit, who is our hiding place and our shield.
Second, we keep the commandments of our God.
This is a choice we make, whether to follow man’s ways or to turn to God and follow his stated will.
What is the stated will of God? He spelled it out in the Ten Commandments; and to that, Jesus added the Golden Rule.
SOS. It is our right and privilege as children of the King. He encourages us to use it as often as we wish. There is no mistaking our call, and he will come running every time.
When life buffets us, we have a solution. We have an SOS rescue mission waiting to come to our aid. We call it Jesus Christ.
