Jesus, Our Overcomer

The nature of life is hard.

Oh, there are plenty of good things in life, but they are like a seed in a very tough shell, surrounded by difficulty and waiting to be pulled out and enjoyed.

Travel … it’s not the travel we enjoy but the destination. Travel is mostly annoyance, lots of sitting around, and more annoyance.

Our children … we love them and find joy in them, but oh, the sleepless nights and messes they make.

Our forever home, the special one we sacrificed for … and calling the repairman, scheduling lawn care, and oh, no! The roof is leaking again!

Even our relationship with the Father … we stumble, dust ourselves off, then down in the dirt we go once more.

Yet in it all, Christ is our anchor. John 16:33 tells us:

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

See, our Christian walk is much like travel. There are many good experiences along the way, but in between, we must visit the check-in counter, change planes (or buses or trains), and be on the lookout for our next meal. Delays are part of the travel experience, and finally, we must also write a check to pay for it all.

So, sit back and enjoy your walk with Jesus. Relish in his wonderful presence. Accept the setbacks as part of life. Jesus is our overcomer … a travel guide of sorts. He has been through it all and knows how and when to throw out an arm to protect us or to point us in a new direction.

When we travel with Jesus, our peace comes from recognizing that we are not in control, but HE is.
