2 Goals for Peace from the Book of John

Turmoil cuts our heart with knives of glass.

The core of who we are leaks from us onto those around us.

Call them tears, angry words, or acts of desperation, it’s obvious to those around us that something’s not okay.

Here are the words of the Christ with 2 Goals for Peace from the Book of John.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” – John 14:27 (ESV)

Jesus first states what he’s doing for us, and it’s a joyous thing. He says:

Peace I leave with you.

Then, just to make sure we get it, the Master repeats his words to us:

My peace I give to you.

He emphasizes that his peace is unlike anything we’ve ever known.

Not as the world gives do I give to you.

Now (and only after his promise and reassurance that this is something fantastic and new) he shares the two Goals for Peace that he gifts unto us.

Our 1st Goal for Peace:

Let not your heart be troubled.

How exciting is that? The little bumps and misfires that happen to us, let’s slough them off. Like water off a duck’s back, let them go.

Our 2nd Goal for Peace:

Neither let [your heart] be afraid.

Not even the big pitfalls in life can bring us down. That medical prognosis, the financial downturn, even a soured relationship … we don’t have to be afraid. God’s peace can be with us through it all.

What’s troubling you? Turn it over to God, for he is the peacemaker, and he wishes to calm your soul.
