Across the world, people know of the Statue of Liberty. She stands in New York Harbor on Liberty Island on a pedestal as tall as she is, rising out of the fog to proclaim freedom to anyone passing by.
Her actual title is Liberty Enlightening the World.
For nearly a century and a half, immigrants have looked for the statue as they approached America. What makes her so special? The fact that she is always there, unchanging, a permanent part of American folklore.
Several years ago a disaster movie showed a frozen Lady Liberty, on her side in an icy ocean, and that was when we knew America was finished.
Lady Liberty means more to the world than most of us are aware.
It is the same with the Christian who stands firm in Christ, and who refuses to let sin bring him down. Galatians 5:1 tells us to stand fast in the Liberty of Christ, and to keep free from anything that would weaken our footing in Jesus.
It is our steadfast strength that draws people to Christ. People will remember the rock we stand upon, and they will look for us to lead them back home.
What a disaster if they find us fallen into the world, the strength of our Christian witness broken, and our love for Christ awash in an icy sea. We must be Lady Liberty for the world, our arm raised in triumph over sin, drawing the lost to Christ.
Remember that pedestal? We stand on the shoulders of the Redeemer. He is the rock that lifts us up above the fog and keeps us secure through every storm. He is the sturdy foundation upon which we stand.
When we place our trust in Jesus, he will lift us up as a testimony before the world.
