Absolute safety in the modern day world is hard to find. No matter what safeguards we put up, someone comes up with a way to breach our defenses. From computer viruses cracking our Internet firewalls to bunker buster missiles in the realm of war, we are at risk every day.
So, where do we find true safety? Do we hunker in our storm cellars, perhaps build a tornado vault in our home, or is there another way?
Clearly these examples deal with our physical safety, and in reality, there is a limited amount of bulwarks we can build around our physical bodies. However, our physical bodies are temporary. What about that which is eternal? Do we have a bomb proof shelter to run to when the enemy sends his attacks our way?
David gives us a song in Psalm 61:4 that outlines how we can build a bomb proof shelter in the Lord.
1st Step: I will abide in your tabernacle forever.
2nd Step: I will trust in the shelter of your wings.
3rd Step: I will rest in the peace of the Lord.
Only the first two steps can be found in Psalm 61:4, but the third is a direct corollary with the others. If we abide, and we trust, we will rest, for God assures us it is so. Acts 10:36 reminds us of the message of God, for he sent the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, his son.
When we feel that we have been ground beneath the heel of the world, and the sordid stain of the human condition has tarred our souls, we can find the peace of God. Just follow the steps we’ve been given:
Abide.
Trust.
Rest.
That’s all there is to it. Then we will stand bomb proof in him.
The hand of Jesus offers us his peace. All he needs from us is to reach out for it.
