Babies are cute. Their little dimpled smiles and those fat little fingers.
Their adorability can be scientifically evaluated.
What!?! No way!
Yes way. It can be measured. Put to a standard and recorded on paper.
What makes a child adorable? Let’s think about baby animals for a comparison.
What makes a kitten cute, or a puppy, calf, fawn, or any other newborn animal?
It’s the size of their head, the relative dimension of their face to the rest of them, the placement of their eyes and so on.
We can measure their cuteness by the shape of who they are.
Then there’s the lack of coordination, the stumpy movements, and the wobbling walk. It tweaks our heart and invites our love to spill out of us.
God forbid that we don’t like children. Seriously. Read about God’s instructions in Mark 10:14-16.
“But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.’ And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.”
Our children are the most precious things we possess. We are to teach them of the Lord, show them the love of God, and then turn them loose into the world to become mighty warriors for the sake of the cross.
We mustn’t let ourselves forget that just like newborn animals, childhood is brief. Let’s love our little ones while we can and instill in them our commitment to our Lord.
We take one step, and those who follow us are right behind.
