You’re finally a dad.
What does that mean, other than the obvious child you fathered?
What does God require from us when we take on parenthood?
Here are five opportunities to practice being a good father from the Word of God.
Dad Opportunity No. 1:
We must point our children toward the cross.
2 Timothy 2:22-25 says:
“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, … not quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting opponents with gentleness … leading to a knowledge of the truth.”
Dad Opportunity No. 2:
We must teach our children the ways of the Lord.
Proverbs 1:8-9 tells us:
“Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.”
Dad Opportunity No. 3:
We must let them see God is number one in our life.
Mark 12:30-31 tells us:
“ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second [commandment] is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Dad Opportunity No. 4:
We must reveal humility in how we deal with life.
Micah 6:8 says:
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Dad Opportunity No. 5:
We must be pure in all that we do: how we talk, the movies we watch, and how we treat our wives.
Philippians 4:8 tells us:
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
We are the example our children will become. It’s up to us to live as God would have us to live.
