It is a parent’s duty to raise up a child in the way that he should go, so that he will not depart from it. However, it is a grandparent’s right to spoil the child and send the tyke home to Mom and Dad.
We laugh at that, and those of us with children sometimes feel there’s more truth in those words than there should be. Jesting aside, a grandparent’s job entails more than just spoiling the grandchildren and letting Mom and Dad deal with the results. Grandma and Grandpa have dictates from God, also.
Let’s look at three duties the Word lays upon grandparents:
Grandparent Duty #1: We are to teach our grandchildren the blessings God has bestowed upon us.
Deuteronomy 4:9 instructs us not only to remember all the things the Lord has done for us, but to teach them to our sons, and our son’s sons.
When we recount the ways God has made a mark on our lives, our grandchildren will be able to recognize the hand of God on their own lives. Our lifestyle will draw them to Christ.
Grandparent Duty #2: We are to respect the dictates of God for our grandchildren’s sake.
Psalm 103:17 states an underlying truth of God’s eternal nature. If we fear (show respect for) the Lord, he will shower us with mercy from everlasting to everlasting, and he will continue to rain his righteousness upon our grandchildren as well.
Our lives are quickly gone as a flower that blooms and dies away. Yet, our legacy lives on. A good name is the best gift we can leave our grandchildren, and it is one they will benefit from forever.
Grandparent Duty #3: We are to provide something for our grandchildren after we are gone.
Proverbs 13:22 tells us that a good man leaves an inheritance unto his grandchildren.
If we have money, we can help out with a college fund or provide a down payment on that first home. Alternately, we can leave a treasure of memories and shared experiences that our grandchildren will value for a lifetime.
Our grandchildren should be the light of our lives, but more importantly, we should do everything we can to ensure that God becomes the light of their lives.
